Llegados a estas fechas, la Navidad, he visto interesante y apropiado que veamos cómo lo que hoy es un escándalo, 20 años atrás era normal y ni si quiera llamaba la atención.

Esta canción de The Pogues, creada en 1987 fue censurada en diciembre del 2007 en una emisora de la BBC después de 20 años de su creación.

La emisora emite una versión diferente de la canción navideña, en la que la palabra "faggot" (marica) es eliminada. Ésta aparece acompañando a la frase "eres una basura, eres despreciable, eres un marica barato y desagradable".

Con respecto a esta censura, ha habido mucha polémica, ya que la canción ha llegado a convertirse en uno de los temas navideños favoritos de la sociedad.

Es cierto, que hace alusión directa al tema de la homofobia, y que hace veinte años, quizás la importancia del mismo era menor. El homosexual era un enfermo simplemente.

Actualmente, el tema ha sido mucho más tratado y se trata de vencer día a día, por ello resulta hiriente a los oídos escuchar en un "villancico" frases como éstas.

Otros, en cambio, la califican como una forma de interpretar un papel, el de la vulgaridad de la palabra en la sociedad actualmente, sin darle mayor importancia al asunto. Es decir, diferentes formas de pensar, dandole mayor o menor peso, pero aquí hemos reflejado cómo hasta en las canciones navideás nuestra sociedad homófoba transmite mensajes despreciativos hacia estas personas.
